Crone – The Wise Woman Hypothesis

At the seasoned age of 42, Chris and Dominque got a very special delivery in the form of a beautiful baby girl. Their bundle of joy was nothing less than what they had hoped for. Seven years after giving birth Dominque started experiencing perimenopause. This led them to speak with many medical professionals on the matter and different forms of treatment. One doctor proclaimed treating the symptoms of menopause was an act of fixing natures mistake.

Living in a patriarchal society women are dismissed on many levels of their contributions and Henze seeing how deeply this effected his wife and family he pondered where this all began in history for women and how was it dealt with? This sent him down a rabbit hole of historic research and this birthed: Crone – The Wise Woman Hypothesis shows evolutionary proof that women, especially mature women, are best equipped to run the world. It travels through 2 million years of human evolution connecting the dots of how mastering fire and cooking changed the trajectory of early hominins from other primates, and how the adaptation of menopause supercharged that trajectory. Menopause affected our evolution and then grandmothers were able to accelerate it.

Christopher and his wife Dominique Debroux worked on the hypothesis for years and the project accelerated into the film where the team was joined by producer Jonathan Sanger.

At first taking the traditional route of creating a proof of concept and seeking funding seemed like the right thing to do. As time progressed Dominique and Chris decided the best thing to do was to start interviewing different women.

This new documentary, Crone – The Wise Woman Hypothesis, dives into something fundamental that will change evolutionary science and elevate our understanding of how we became modern humans. It answers why menopause exists. Currently the most heralded answer to that is the Grandmother Hypothesis which looks at the effect of post-menopausal woman on birth-frequency, infant brain development and other notable ideas. “We see the
Grandmother Hypothesis as a reinforcing concept, rather than an initiating one.” Says director Christopher Henze. “We ask, how did our brains get to be large enough to even make use of the beneficial effects of grandmothers?”
